Sonargaon vegetable farming ushers in hope for export

Growers in Sonargaon of Narayanganj are getting interested in vegetables farming for making high profit through exporting to various Middle Easter and European countries.

They are cultivating vegetables along other crops on the paddy field and litchi garden.

Among the unions in the upazila, Sonmandi and Baidyerbazar produce highest quantam of over 50 varieties vegetables in the winter season for export to the foreign countries.

But, the coronavirus outbreak hampered vegetable export this year, creating concern among the farmers.

Vegetable exporter SM Jahangir Hossain, also a leader of Bangladesh Fruits, Vegetables & Allied Products Exporters Association, informed Bangladesh exports vegetables worth about Tk 800 crore yearly through this company.

“But, this season we incurred huge loss because of coronavirus situation. We could not export vegetables abroad,” he said, adding that export has began again on a limited scale.

“Besides, adequate quantam of vegetables can not be exported as per demand due to lack of proper transportation system,” he added.

After collecting directly from the field, vegetables are taken to a warehouse in Sutrapur in the capital for greading, shorting and cutting. After packaging, the vegetables are sent to the airport for exporting abroad.

Jahangir Hossain said that many entrepreneurs are now showing interest to vegetable farming for making handsome profit.

It has also created employment opportunity for young people.

Upazila agriculture officer Monira Akhter said exporters can easily collect vegetables from this areas because the location is near to the capital.

She said the upazila agriculture office was working extensively to help growers in preventing pest attack and producing best quality vegetables.
