Stocks open week slightly down

Stock markets on Sunday opened the week downtrend as risk-averse investors went on late hours selling binge on sector-wise issues.

DSEX, the key index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went down by 33.45 points or 0.65 per cent to settle at 5,074.59. Two other indices also edged lower. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, lost 4.47 points to finish at 1,794.14 and the DSE Shariah Index shed 9.68 points to close at 1,170.41.

Turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, stood at Taka 8.60 billion, which was 22 per cent lower than the previous day’s turnover of Taka 7.05 billion.

Losers took a strong lead over the gainers, as out of 358 issues traded, 213 ended lower, 81 higher and 64 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

A total number of 161,740 trades were executed in the day’s trading session with a trading volume of 270.11 million shares and mutual fund units.

Beximco topped the turnover chart with 20.26 million shares worth Taka 685 million changing hands, closely followed by Beximco Pharma, Republic Insurance, Walton and IFIC Bank.

The insurance sector dominated the gainer’s chart again with Bangladesh National Insurance was the day’s best performer, posting a 10 percent gain while Dominage Steel was the worst loser, losing 9.85 per cent.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also kept losing with its All Shares Price Index (CASPI)—shedding 75 points to close at 14,594 while the Selective Categories Index – CSCX falling 43 points to close at 8,794.

Of the issues traded, 150 declined, 61 advanced and 35 remained unchanged on the CSE.

The port city bourse traded 10.28 million shares and mutual fund units with a turnover value of nearly Taka 307 million.
