Water-level rises in Bagerhat due to cyclone Yaas

Water-level of different rivers in Bagerhat district has risen due to the impact of cyclone Yaas in the Bay of Bengal.

After 8.00 am on Tuesday (May 25), the water-level of all rivers including Baleshwar in Sharankhola, Panguchi in Morelganj, Pashur in Mongla, Bhairab in Bagerhat and Daratana has risen by one and a half feet from the normal tide.

Cyclone Yaas has intensified into severe cyclonic storm. It is expected to make landfall early on Wednesday.

Around 6am on Tuesday, the severe cyclonic storm was centred about 575 km south-southwest of Chattogram port, 520 km south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar, 515 km south-southwest of Mongla port and 480 km south-southwest of Payra port, the Met office said in a special bulletin.

Due to favourable atmospheric conditions, the severe cyclonic storm is likely to intensify further, move in a north-northwesterly direction and may reach the northwest Bay by May 26 early morning, it said.
