Some 25 markets and buildings have been sealed off in Sylhet City Corporation for 10 days due to the fear of frequent earthquakes.
City Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury himself inspected 6 of these markets and asked to be closed.
On Sunday (May 30) afternoon, the mayor visited City Super Market, Madhuban Super Market, Mitali Mansion, Cooperative Building, Raja Mansion, Surma Market and James Gallery in the city and asked to be closed. He was accompanied by SCC Executive Magistrate and Sylhet Metropolitan Police officials.
Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury said that 25 risky markets and buildings have been asked to be closed for the next 10 days to escape damage due to frequent earthquakes in the city.
Nur Azizur Rahman, chief engineer of Sylhet City Corporation, said 25 multi-storey buildings in the city were identified as risky in 2019. The buildings are: Collectorate Building-3 on the north side of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Somobay Bank Building on Jail Road, former office building for Women Affairs Officer in the same area, Surma Market, City Super Market in Bandarbazar, Mitali Mansion in Zindabazar, Hotel Ajmir at Dargagate, Madhuban Super Market at Bandarbazar, Mannan View at Tilagarh Kalashir, Shubhechcha-226 building at Sheikhghat area of the city, Nabapushpa 26 /A at Jatarpur, 51/3 Sarkar Bhaban at Chowkidekhi, Raja Mansion at Zindabazar, 4 /A Kibria Lodge at Puranlane, Mitali-74 at Kharpara, Meghna 39/A at Mirzajangal Pathantuli Government Primary School, Akota 377/7 Waris Manzil of North Bagbari, Akota 377/8 Hossain Manzil of the same area, Akota-377/9 Shahnaz Riaz Villa, Bankalapara Nurani-14, Municipal Market on the south bank of Dhopadighi and Municipal Shop at Dhopadighirpar. Among the establishements, 4/A Kibria Lodge of Puranlane has been repaired by hiring experts from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology.
