Four-storey building collapses in Rajshahi

An under-construction four-storey building has collapsed at Koyerdara area in Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC).

The incident took place around 3:00 pm on Sunday (June 20).

However, no casualties were reported in the incident. But several private cars were crushed.

Abdur Rouf, senior station of Rajshahi Sadar Fire Station, said, “The building was about 80 feet long and 40 feet wide. Construction work was completed up to 4th floor of the building. The beams were raised for another floor upstairs. The building was being constructed with substandard construction materials. That is why it has broken down.”

The owner of the building was known as businessman Akhtaruzzaman Bablu. He passed away a year ago. Now the building is owned by his younger brother Nuruzzaman Peter. However, after the death of Akhtaruzzaman Bablu, no construction work was done in the building.

Tofazzal Hossain Modi, manager of the building owner, claimed that standard quality construction materials were used.

He further said the building had already been built but no one lived there. He did not know whether the design of the building had been approved by the Rajshahi Development Authority (RDA).

Senior station officer Abdur Rouf said they would look into whether the design of the building was approved or not and what kind of construction materials were used.
