Minister: Egg price to be brought under control

Public-private joint ventures will reduce the price of eggs, he hopes

Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim hopes that the price of eggs will be reduced through public-private joint ventures so that every person in the country can consume eggs.

“To build a prosperous nation, we are trying to reduce the price of eggs. It is one of the most nutritious foods…it increases immunity and antibodies,” he said while addressing a discussion marking the World Eggs Day at a city hotel on Friday, said a press release.

Department of Livestock, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), World Poultry Science Association-Bangladesh Branch and Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC) jointly organized the event, with the theme “Eat Your Egg Today and Every Day”.

The retail price of layer chicken eggs is Tk105-115 per dozen while local (Deshi) chicken eggs are Tk180-220 per dozen.

Due to the high price of eggs, many lower- and middle-income people are struggling to afford one of the basic food items.

The discussion was presided over by BPICC President Moshiur Rahman while Secretary of the ministry Raunak Mahmud, Director General of the Department of Livestock Dr Sheikh Azizur Rahman, and FAO Bangladesh Representative Robert D Simpson and BPICC Vice President Shamsul Arefin Khaled, among others, were present.

Professor Dr M Shawkat Ali of Poultry Science Department of Bangladesh Agricultural University and Chief nutritionist of BIRDEM Hospital Shamsunnahar Nahid Mahua presented the keynote papers.
