A court here today sentenced two persons, including the mother, to death for killing five-year-old Khandaker Samiul Azim Wafi in June 2010.
The convicts are: Samiul’s mother Esha and Shamsuzzaman Arif alias Bakku, boyfriend of Esha.
Judge Shaikh Nazmul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 handed down the sentence in their absence.
The court also issued arrest warrants against them as they were absconding when the verdict was announced.
Samiul, a student of play group of Green Wood International School in Nabboddya Housing under Adabor Police Station, was allegedly killed by his mother Esha and her paramour Shamsuzzaman Arif in 2010.
Body of Samiul was recovered from a spot near his home at Adabar on June 24, 2010.
Following the incident, his father KM Azim filed a case with Adabar Police Station accusing his wife and Arif.
On October 25, 2012, Adabar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kazi Shahan Haque filed a charge sheet against Esha and Arif.
On February 1, 2012, the court framed charges against the accused.
So far 22 people have testified in the case.
During the investigation, the two were arrested and they had given confessional statements under section 164 in the court regarding their involvement in the murder.
But they went into hiding after they went out of jail on bail.
On December 8, the court canceled their bail as they did not appear.
