Cabinet Division approves Highway Act 2021

The Cabinet Division has approved the final draft of “Highway Act 2021” with the provision of a maximum of two years’ imprisonment and the fine of Tk 5,000 to 5,00,000 for violation.

The final approval of the act was given at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Sangsad Bhaban on Monday (June 28).

Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam told this to the reporters at the Secretariat after the meeting.

He said, “Bangladesh has no law on highway maintenance for so long. Now an integrated law is being made. The Highways Act of 1925 has been repealed and new law is being enacted to regulate highways, construction, development and maintenance activities and free, orderly and safe movement of vehicles.”

Khandker Anwarul Islam said, “Under this law, the government will specifically mention in the gazette who will enter any road or highway or who will not. Which will be declared as an expressway with the highway, how will it be operated, where the toll will be collected.”
